Newcastle Ward
Electing 1 Councillor

JONES, Kawena

My principal place of residence is in the Newcastle Ward area.

I’m standing for council as your voice for our community, and to address the issues that really matter.

Here are some of the policies I will advocate for: effective strategies to engage our community in local government planning; robust and courageous advocacy for sustainable land and water use to protect future generations; business and employment opportunities through infrastructure growth and; innovative technologies so we’re better prepared for the future.

I am born and bred in Whatawhata and am the co-founder of a social-enterprise. I am an experienced public servant having worked in the public sector supporting people into employment for the past 6 years.

In addition, I am a skilled board member, and have extensive networks throughout the greater Waikato. I believe in leadership through service and have been a longstanding, positive contributor to our community through association with marae and sports clubs among other pursuits.

My principal place of residence is in the Newcastle Ward area.

I have served as your councillor since 2007 and I am seeking your support to be re-elected.

I originally stood seeking greater transparency in financial matters and to focus Council’s attention on community programmes. I was instrumental in ensuring that our community no longer pays for such items as town water and town sewage systems. I have continued to advocate for our community on important local projects, including the Whatawhata facility development, the village green extension at Te Kowhai and over $800K spent enhancing Lake Rotokauri. I chair the Alcohol Licensing committee, hold the Civil Defence portfolio, and previously chaired the Roading Committee. I am also on the cross-boundary governance committee negotiating issues with Hamilton City.

I am significantly involved in driving the new vision for Council: Liveable, Thriving, Connected Communities.

If re-elected, I will continue to speak up for the issues that matter in our community and District.
